Here's the first: Jumpin' Java,. It's on Shattuck, across the street from Flint's BBQ.
Posted by peterme at March 3, 2003 07:38 AM | TrackBackWhen Jumpin' Java opened I was so excited as I live just up the street. That area had been lacking a good coffee house for quite a while, La Pena and Starry Plough simply didn't fill the need for a good place to grab a cup of jo and read a magazine.
However I was dismayed to discover that the service was outright rude and the coffee horrible. I tried it several times as I had to walk past it enroute to BART each morning but each time was amazed at how bad the service was (regardless of how well I tipped or what I ordered) and at the poor quality of the coffee. Flints can get away with famously bad service because of the high quality of their BBQ, without ridiculously good quality coffee I couldn't stomach the service at Jumpin' Java.
But that was quite a while ago. As they haven't yet gone out of business I'm hoping things have changed. Has anyone been there recently and if so can they report on the situation?
Posted by: Griffin at September 16, 2003 12:30 PMI am really shocked and surprised to read your comet here Mr. Griffin! And I am also really sorry that you feel this way about Jump’n Java, but what I am surprised the most about is that you still can’t spell the name of the coffee shop even though you are claiming that you have been here many times.
I would like to tell a little about myself, my name is Mike owner and manager of JUMP’N JAVA, I have managed and built a total of five busy and successful coffee shops for almost 12 years until they were sold about two years ago, they are called Royal Ground Coffee. And now I am at JUMP’N JAVA putting my experience and everything I learned in the past years in this shop to outstandingly serve the community an excellent fresh cup of coffee or their favorite drink or item at a very reasonable price. We also have FAIR TRADE and organic coffees. Also Jump’n Java was one of the very first if not the first coffee shop in the east bay to offer FREE wired and wireless internet access. And finally I’d like to thank all my customers for their support during the last two years, and I hope that you (Griffin) would join the very many happy people who think that Jump’n Java is in short a real good coffee shop.
I am a regular customer at jump'n java and I have found the service and coffee to be just what I am looking for. I am a Seattle native and hate starbucks. The plastic interiors and poor quality of coffee make the place unbearable. To me jump'n java is the antistarbucks. It is a small family run coffee shop where the customer is treated like a friend. For example jump'n has free DSL service. I often go there with my lap top and mike doesn’t mind if I log on quickly to check my email, even if I don’t buy anything because he knows I am a regular. Is that poor service? If you like strong coffee in a friendly place jump'n java is the place to go.
Posted by: adam at September 24, 2003 04:02 PMhi, I just want to put in my 2 cents, although this is an old thread. I too was really excited about jump'n java (thought thought in was jamp'n java for awhile), but found the coffee really bad the 3 times I went there. A friend had a similar experience. As a result, I haven't got back (yet). I do see that it's popular, so obviously things have changed or we were unlucky. Is it possible that things were a little below-par in the beginning? I mean, the coffee wasn't strong, it was downright bad.
p.s. please don't pick on my grammar or spelling as a way to discredit my opinion, it's so 3rd grade. and no, I am not a starbucks patron.
Posted by: Local Coffee Drinker at October 30, 2003 11:02 AMSurely Mike doesn't expect me to give "JUMP’N JAVA" another chance after insulting my spelling and as dismissing my experiences there as a customer? Ironic that he would make a spelling error in the very sentence in which he mocks me for misspelling his establishment’s name ("comet" instead of "comment"). A poor effort at spin if ever there was one.
I retract my original question asking for a more recent report on the coffee establishment. I don't care if they have improved on the bad coffee and rude customer service I experienced there when they first opened. Mike has convinced me I don't want to give this place another try.
I’ll just keep going to NOMAD up the street, even though it’s a few blocks out of my way when walking home from work. Mike should read their owners response to negative feedback posted on this site; obviously they are capable of conducting adult dialogue and care about their customers: http://www.beastblog.com/archives/cat_dining_cafescoffeehouses.html
Hey everybody@!
Love Jumpin' Java!!!! Actually like the coffee better than Espresso Roma un in Elmwood. Lived in the neighborhood for a good three years and it was our regular morning haunt.
The guys working there have always been really sweet to us and we're always rooting for them to keep up the local flavor.
I encourage you to go back. With the holidays coming up, the Eggnog Lattes should be back - YUM!!! My personal fattening favorite.
They are also a 'hot spot' now with free wireless web if that interests anyone. Come in, drink some espresso, write your blogs and see if they don't change their tune :)
As an added note, small business owners right now have an uphill battle - so be kind and give them a chance! Then again, maybe their coffee is just not your 'cup of tea.' Everyone's tastes are their own.
Take care and happy coffee drinking!
Lived in the neighborhood with my girlfriend, now wife, for several years and we went there practically every morning. Jump'n Java guys are great and were very friendly to us.
Coffee was great, and it was great to even HAVE good coffee in the neighborhood.
We live in El Cerrito now and have to go to Starbucks in the Plaza every morning, so we definitely miss Mike's place.
Sorry you had such a bad experience. Give them another try. They're good guys and I'm sure they'd try to get you what you want as far as coffee's concerned.
Just came across this page that attracted my interest with the headline 'Free WiFi' and read Griffin's comments and subsequent humor. I have to agree with Mike that it's just not right to hypocritically attack people's spelling (perhaps this may be the result of one too many cups of coffee? ;) Anyway, I sense Grif may have hit a nerve since you have obviously invested some blood, sweat and tears in your business. I've driven by your shop many times and never gone in but I must say you have certainly made the neighborhood a whole lot easier on the eyes. Perhaps you should offer Mr. Griffin an olive branch with a 1/2 priced cup of jo on the end or something like that and I'll do my best to stop by next time I'm in the neighborhood and decide for myself =)
Posted by: Amy at November 6, 2003 01:54 PMI've had both kinds of experience there - I've been treated rudely by the guy behind the counter (who I haven't seen lately) and leered at by guys hanging out and I've also been greeted warmly and with a smile at other times. My only complaint is that there's nothing BUT sweets and coffee (okay, not great not awful coffee but drinkable) and so I don't often go there if I want anything except a cuppa since I'm not a sweets eater at all. I think it's an asset to the neighborhood ande their prices are better than Nomads up the street so that's a plus.
