OK_ i confess. i am a seafood snob. i'm also a sushi snob. but i'm also not always flush. my solution? go to Tokyo Fish Market. On San Pablo just north of Gilman in Berkeley, this little storefront backs a big briny wallop!
first off, everything is of the highest quality. sparkling seafood, tons of sashimi grade items, and all the stuff you need to go with it. (shiso leaf, quail eggs...)
every thursday, they currently have a live crab special: $3.99 a pound! they usually have uni ( i looooove uni), and last time i went, i got 1/2 a pound of monkfish liver (ankimo) for $6!!! (for the unintiated, ankimo is the foie gras of the sea...)
this makes me a very happy gal. oh yeah, they also have several flavors of gummies (litchi, muscat, pineapple, kiwi, etc...) & that makes my wife happy as well (gummies are her candy of choice while watching DVDs...)
my second fave place for seafood is berkeley bowl. less of a selection, but very decent, & the quality is great. become a regular & the fish counter people are very nice, getting super-fresh stuff for you from back.
orur parents, Alexandra & Merrill, bought our "wedding dishes" at your store a two person stoneware set of blue grey plates and large bowls in a matched set.
Alas, we have broken a bowl and would like to replace it. We live in Minneapolis and are wondering if you would post one of the bowls to us? We can pay be creditcard, paypal or even check.
If you email me at harmonj@hotmail.com I will send you a photo of the existing bowl to match up.
Thank you so much

thank you, thank you thank you
I would seriously recommend Alameda's SushiHouse. They make very clever rolls. The place is ridiculously busy at all hours... its so unfortunately how good word of mouth spreads.
Posted by: Joon at August 7, 2003 06:49 PMI bloody well abhor seafood, but I love Tokyo Fish Market. I just started working nearby. That place is the quintessential neighborhood market. The workers, esp. the fish boys, are hilarious. The place has wonderful Hawaiian and Asian style candies (Ting Ting Jahe, anyone?). And there's always some bit of local gossip. I'm so glad a co-worker turned me on to this place.

My favorite is the Big Fish Sandwich they do, filled with all kinds of satisfying tidbits, octopus, diced marlin, tuna flakes - my! I'm feeling hungry already!
