I live in Oakland. If I lived in Berkeley, I would order pizza delivered from Little Chicago - end of story. Best deep dish, dareisaybetter than Zachary's. But Berkeley only.
And this is not a Chicago pizza standoff. This is a quest for tasty food to be delivered to the Oakland-Glenview-Dimond-Fruitvale area. I don't care about cuisine type - I just don't want to leave my PlayStation2. Any ideas?
Posted by justin at March 26, 2003 07:22 PM | TrackBackAahh! EZDineInn.com is a torturous parody of what I want! An unnavigatible interface for restaurants that will have food picked up by the EZDineInn driver. I read on ChowHound somewhere that "wilderness" is somewhere you can't get food delivered. Ahhha!
Posted by: Justin at March 26, 2003 07:30 PMWaiter.com only taunts me.
Posted by: Justin at March 26, 2003 07:42 PM"Delivery" is not a cuisine type or restaurant attribute on SF Gate of CitySearch. Doesn't any online local information provider feel my pain?
Posted by: Justin at March 26, 2003 07:44 PMWe may be America's Culinary Mecca; I had to settle for Leaning Tower of Pizza in Oakland for delivery this evening. Decent pesto pizza. 444-6824.
Posted by: Justin at March 26, 2003 09:30 PMTry Pastino's (482-4701, 4207 Park, up the hill between 580 and 13, across the street from the tavern with the ridiculous dancing cat on the sign). I don't know if they deliver, but they definitely do take-out and have an excellent deep dish.
Other favorites: cannellone di mare and the chef salad (if you eat in, ask for two plates, what they bring out is two big salads).
(okay, this is just sad:
http://www.themenupage.com/delivery.html#Oakland
)
Extreme Pizza was the only pizza place that would deliver to my apartment, which is on the Oakland side of Telegraph Avenue.
510-486-0770. Long wait times, but sometimes my lazy ass won't bother getting out of the couch, bed and/or computer chair.
Posted by: ernie at April 4, 2003 03:20 PMso this is no consolation when your fridge is empty and you want pizza...
we are diehard make-yer-own pizza fans now that Trader Joe's sells fresh pizza dough. it's in the cold section by the cheese shelf. costs ONE WHOLE DOLLAR. we buy two just to make sure we always have some in the house when we get the craving.
it's easy to make...takes about 20 minutes to in all. we even use our own sauce from tomato paste. and it's a damn fine pizza too. the best i've had in ages. i could go on with all my prep and pizza cooking recipes but that might be a post in itself.
email if you want more info. ciao.
try Rustica pizza and get their fancy cornmeal crust. mmm mmm.
Posted by: Rena at April 20, 2003 10:29 AMp.s. we were at Pastino's last weekend and they definitely offer delivery service.
Posted by: gwen at May 16, 2003 12:50 PMdelivery in oakland is a poor state of affairs. one of the few reasons i actually miss sf is delivered thai & indian food.
zagat's print guides do have appendixes in the back for take out & delivery, but oakland has so few.
mr. pizza man is merely OK pizza & other foods, but they do deliver 24-7, even on x-mas.
as far as delivery pizza in fruitvale, i would call lanesplitter. i think they have a delivery station somewhere over there. they are a small business (2 or 3 outlets), run by music & culture lovers (they hire musicians, fund local events like beastfest, and play music themselves), and deliver. their pizza is great, & their brewpub on san pablo (at university) has great beer!
Posted by: dani at May 19, 2003 12:23 PMIchiban delivers in Oakland and in other areas. It's the only Japanese restaraunt I know of that delivers, besides the ones at EZdineInn.com
Posted by: Ashlea at July 4, 2003 02:59 PMGreat site! Do you know of any like yours for the Reseville or Sacramento area?
Tom
We're in the Laurel, just south of the Diamond district. Here's what I've found:
Our favorite pizza delivery is Roma on McArthur near High. Pizza is good, not great, a little skimpy on toppings but ok sauce and good crust for a very good price. Great service, once when I ordered Eggplant they told me it would take longer because they had to run over to Albertsons buy and cook the eggplant first - it was really good too!
Other options we have tried:
Rusticas in Montclair, good but pricy.
Round table: service and pizza were abysmal.
Pastrini. (Don't know exactly how to spell it) - Pizza was good, a bit pricey, but they can also deliver from their Italian menu. Located in Glenview on upper Park Street.
Pizza Love - didn't like the pizza.
Cybels - again, not to crazy for the pizza.
Several Chinese restraints in our area, none of them have been notable.
3 other non delivery options we like are:
La Costa (International and 36th Ave.) Great Mexican with a palm tree patio and EXCELLENT tostadas for *cheap*.
And Phnem Phnom (also, don't know how to spell it) Cambodian food on 8th and Alice (Downtown), however they are supposedly opening another restaurant on McArthur and 38th - Yippee. Maybe we can talk 'em into delivery.
Old Weng Ping Village - this is definitely not delivery but if you miss Thai food it is totally worth venturing out for. It’s on McArthur about 3 blocks south of Mills in a very neighborhoody place. It’s an experience of the most authentic kind; not to be missed. Food is made to order and good enough for take out as well.
Bottom line, decent delivery seems like a good niche to get into. I bet the Dotcom days brought over a lot of refugees who miss their take out.
Purple Pepper Pizza on Rockridge also delivers. Solid, down and dirty pizza if you don't feel like gourmet Rustica. They are currently closed for renovations but should reopen soon.

Posted by: Miller Steve at March 16, 2004 12:27 AMYang Chow on Grand delivers, and their food is pretty decent. Their potstickers are yummy.
If only Lo Coco delivered - I'd never leave home...
Posted by: rfs at April 4, 2004 09:52 PMall the listed places are great. but if u ever get that cravin fer something spicy, Koryo in oakland has the best korean i've ever had. it's in a plaza on 44th and telegraph. get one of those spicy soups to go. i'm hooked on that stuff.
Posted by: ty at June 13, 2004 06:12 PMJust discovered
Great pizza, with exceptional service on 326 23rd street, behind ymca on broadway.
Sopranos Pizza Pasta & Grill. They make the best pizza I've had in Oakland and Berkeley area. Gourmet Vegetarian! Alfredo sauce, Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Artichoke, Spinach etc, the best! The place has leather booths, contemporary design, wonderful service, and again great food.
Ryan is right Sopranos is my favorite.
I live on Grand Ave. Sopranos is the ultimate choice in Oakland. My family is into pizza. In the past we've been ordering from Mr.Pizza Man, well (Mr.PM'S pizza is probably 4 on a 10 point scale), once we've tried Sopranos we got hooked!!!
Corn meal crust, fresh, clean, crust o my god, it remainds me of the east coast places.Definately try 510.251.1900 open 7 days
raj indian cuisine on piedmont ave. really great food (though limited menu)free delivery.
Posted by: nora at August 31, 2004 05:56 PMSopranos Pizza its like a dream come true. I was born in Chicago, loved home pizza, lived in New York, loved east coast pizza. Settled in Berkeley about a year ago. Tried many places, didn't like any. My friend gave me the flyer from Sopranos Pizza, so I gave it a shot. Oh-oh-oh!!! Sopranos tantalized and delighted my senses!!! It was a full-bodied pizza, alive pizza, fresh, crispy, with all necessary properties in it. Call 510.251.1900 they deliver too. 326 23 RD STREET @ WEBSTER.
Posted by: paul at September 8, 2004 01:34 AMYou guys have to be kidding. Sopranos is disgusting!! They took FOREVER to bring my pizza and half of it was stuck to the top of the box!! What was there was soggy and achingly mediocre. Please, tell me you're joking and that Oakland has something better to offer. Please.
Posted by: sam at September 14, 2004 10:00 PMI read the comments here and decided to try
Sopranos tonight. I had them deliver a 16"
sausage pizza. It did arrive in around the 45
minutes they predicted and it was warm and
intact.
I grew up in Massachusetts and NYC and I have
tried Gino's East in Chicago. I can't say I
was impressed. The pizza was okay, but nothing
I'd want to eat often. The pizza was doughy,
with oddly thick crust. The sauce and cheese
were non-descript in that all-too-familiar
traditionless, forgetable California style.
The strips of sausage were disturbing.
I'm sick of Rustica (and their prices) and
unimpressed with Roma. I'm afraid Oakland is
still disappointing for me in the area of
food delivery. On the other hand, my neighborhood
is about to get a Lanesplitters (never tried
their pizza, but they have good beer) and some
new yupster wood oven pizza place run by some
ex-Chez Panisse chef. And I can always walk or
bike to all those great Korean places on
telegraph.
BTW, for pizza I guess I'd go to Berkeley for
either Arinell's (for that East Coast street
corner style, if not quite as good) or to the
Cheese Board (for the best of the California
style). I am liking what they are doing at
the Emeryville Arizmendi, but think of it as
flatbread. And of course none of them deliver.
I agree with "rfs"
too bad, I would have tried Soprano's but multiple fake posts makes me want to try somewhere else first.
ARINELL IN SAN FRAN!!! BEST PIZZA WEST OF THE HUDSON RIVER! FOOLS BETTER RECOGONIZE!
Posted by: Jarad Stein at October 22, 2004 04:18 AMI have tried Sopranos and was underwhelmed. Definitely not enough cheese, way too much crust. Supposedly they have a "New York-style" thin crust, but I am dubious.
Anyone have an idea whether the new Lanesplitter on Telegraph would deliver down to Grand and Telegraph? And where do I go to find out (can't seem to find a website for them)?
Amusingly enough, my comment about Soprano's isn't here anymore. I may have used a fake email address for it - I hope that's the reason it was removed.
Anyway, their pizza is decent, if you get the thin crust and pesto sauce. The fake posts are annoying, though.
Overall, the state of food delivery in Oakland is still pretty woeful. We've even gone back to using ezdineinn a couple times, despite their atrocious fee. Their customer service and delivery times have gotten quite a bit better.
"Szechuan Restaurant" on Lake Park delivers, but it wasn't that great. "Szechuan Garden Restaurant" on Piedmont Ave also delivers, and was better. I like Yang Chow (on Grand) better than either of them, and they often deliver in 20 minutes or less.
Posted by: rfs at October 24, 2004 10:52 PMMiss Saigon near the Grand Lake Theater delivers, although when I asked if they delivered west of Telegraph, the server said, "soometimes." Food's great, though.
Posted by: Alexis at October 26, 2004 09:47 AMI haven't had a great pizza in years. The pizza I loved and thought was great was a place called mama rosa's on high street in the laurel maxwell park area. Alas, it no longer exists.
Is lanesplitters on Telegraph any good? Can someone let me know.
Posted by: Len at November 1, 2004 11:30 PMtwo places to try, of course they are in berkeley (why are we oaklanders left out?!) so no delivery, but great pizza (otherwise we go to san bruno to TOTO's, killer pizza, the best we have found in sf and east bay, east coast style been around since the '40' or 50's, get the extra garlic! it is on el camino real) i digress, okay, try Gioia on hopkins, really good east coast style, a bit pricey but worth it, the other place can't remember the name but it is on university west of shattuck near goodwill and papa's, good stuff and good deals.
Posted by: Lisa at December 16, 2004 08:52 PMDidn't know little italy existed.

I ordered at 4:00-4:30, came at 5:06
Unbeknownst to me, I was to be delivered a free large salad w/ my order.
I thought "oh great, bunch of iceberg lettuce and some sysco ranch packets or worse", but it was an organic greek salad. I opened the box up and it was like a mini zacharys, only zacharies doesn't say anything about organic and zachary's has a market flexibility when it comes to price because thye have more sizes.
The initial smell was not as rocking as zachary's, but it was equivalent with it's crust matching that of zachary's, only thinner. Nieter at the crust level of UNOs although both are simpler and therefore easiest to reproduce at home which qualifies such pizza as higher scoring.
Lot's of water, kind of salty...
Fresher skinned roma tomatos would do wonders.
http://www.littlechicago.net/
I saw someone on here say zacharies only is for berkeley, and that just isn't true, the "berkeley one is by rockridge bart and north oakland is it's prime market, along with rustica's location as well...
Posted by: kds at December 29, 2004 09:45 PMThe new Lanesplitters on Telegraph is great! Their 7-10 Split will get you two tasty slices and a pint of beer for $7. Hard to beat. Too bad they don't deliver.
Posted by: Nick at January 13, 2005 08:20 PMI've lived in Oakland for about a year and until recently found the delivery situation nearly hopeless. It's a sad state of affairs when Domino's is one of your better choices. About a month ago, my roomate found a great Thai place that delivers and I haven't ordered from anywhere else since, and I order a lot of delivery. It's called Bangkok Palace and the number is (510) 465-4673. They are good, fast, and cheap. You have to request a delivery menu when you order because never have them if you don't and once you have it, you can just go down the list. Enjoy

Posted by: dynamo52 at March 18, 2005 02:50 AMSoprano's is about equal to Domino's. Rather bland but approaching being edible in a drunken pinch. 4.0 (out of 10)
Rustica is slightly overpriced, decent but not amazing by any means. 5.2
Zachary's is pretty damn good but you're lucky if they will even answer the phone on the weekend. I don't think they deliver. 6.5
Mr. Pizza Man not too exciting but I can't say anything bad about it. (except avoid their funky chicken) 5.0
Arizmendi's on Lakeshore has awesome half-baked but serves only one type of fancy California style pizza and has very limited hours. 8.0
So around here you are probably better off getting a DiGiorno or making your own.
lake merritt pizza rocks - they deliver to fruitvale and are pretty affordable - pretty good toppings and well cooked
Posted by: tommy at December 29, 2005 11:22 PMI've managed to save up roughly $10212 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?
