In the New York Times, an Oakland-local writer gives mad props to the nature nearby: Ah, the Pastoral Beauty of Oakland (Wait, Did You Say Oakland?), by Patricia Lee Brown. Redwood Regional Park, Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, Huckleberry Botanical Preserve and even Arrowhead marsh are celebrated by America's paper of record. Why do we need them to tell us we live in a beautiful city? Anyhow, her excited prose and bits of history make for decent context and yet another reminder that we should all have left the computer earlier today.
