Hi neighbors. After nine wonderful productions in the past three years, Transparent Theater is closing. We have enjoyed your presence at the plays, your emails and your comments, and we want to thank you for all of your support. Transparent's managing director, Coley, and I are pursuing projects outside of theater and with the additional factor of a baby coming in the summer(!), we have decided that the time is right for us to close the theater. In the short term, as you heard from Tanya at Epic Arts (1923 Ashby), the theater will be hosting a production of THE BRIGHT RIVER by Tim Barsky running through March 20. We encourage you to come check it out -- we look forward to the opening this Thursday. In terms of our longer term plans, we are already talking to potential buyers of the theater, and it is our hope that it continues as a performance space. If you know anyone or any group that may be interested in a fully-permitted, beautiful performance space in this great neighborhood and next to BART, please let us know. Best wishes and thanks again for all of your support for the years of Transparent Theater. Tom ClydePosted by peterme at February 25, 2004 08:28 PM | TrackBack
hey there,
i just bought a house in south berkley and i am interested in the overall health of our community. it seems like there are a lot of angry youths roaming the streets around here, and i want to know what i can do to help redirect their disaffection. also, i would love to get some people invloved in a tree planting group with me. i think there are a lot of areas that need some love in this section of town. also, i would love to get a group of people together that to help me pick up all of the trash that is dumped around here. do you think the city would allow us to get rid of the refuse at the city dump for no free if we are a community group? i really think that this area is turning into a freat place to live, but we all need to help this area become even better. as much as i am timid about calling in police to solve complex sociological problems, i think we should try to put an end to the loitering on sacramento avenue. i have witnessed many drug deals and illegal activity going on amongst groups of young men that loiter on sacramento avenue, and i am sick of it. this is a great area with a lot of great people who deserve the best that we can all offer to each other. i want to see the children of south berkely grow up in a loving environment that fosters positive growth. we need more litter removal and tree planting, and less liquor stores, loitering drug dealers and negativity. i am a teacher at berkeley high school and i have lots of free time in the afternoons to help accomplish all of the goals i outlined in this email. if anyone is interested in organizing some community action i can be reached at kousha29@hotmail.com
thank you
Posted by: Jonathan Stephens at February 27, 2004 10:02 PMAs a long time resident of the area (actually live down by Fruitvale now) I'll offer that the area is a mixed blessing. Urban planners have chosen south Berkeley to mix HUD projects with residential housing - unusual in that they haven't defined a no man's land and moved all the projects to some forbidden corner like most cities. It offers those lower income residents an environment where they live next door to home owners. It's certainly more responsibility to home owners as they have to engage some unsavory elements, but it also offers an opportunity for those who really care about the community to develop some positive habits in the neighborhood.
I have seen this area stay pretty static for the last decade despite some serious efforts - if you expecting major changes, don't, you'll be disappointed. However, incremental improvement is something entirely available. Periodically you will notice the Oakland PD's Police Bus parked on Alcatraz Ave. The area is notorious. On the other hand, there are some great folks living in the nearby 'hood and some incredible businesses that have over the years made efforts at improving the community.
My recommendation would be to engage the businesses nearby - especially those with a higher social interest, but really all will benefit. Yogalayam, Alkebulanian Books, The Vault (maybe not called that anymore). There is ACME performance space, the Cajun Restaurant, and don't forget the middle eastern Copy Shop that has the stadium-seating stage and venue in the back and the Oud lessons upstairs. It is a rich community and I wish you luck!
Word. Historically there has been a major Juneteenth celebration on Adeline between Alcatraz and BART - don't miss it!

Thanks to Transparent for all the great shows and for bringing this fantastic venue to the south Berkeley! Glad that the building can remain in use as an art venue!
