...will be the words out of your mouth after you chomp into a slice from Gioia Pizzeria. A New York-style joint (read: Thin Crust, As God Intended Pizza To be), this, with the CheeseBoard Pizza Collective, firmly places Berkeley in The Best City For Pizza In America contest. I usually give the crust to the dog, but in this case, I ate every bite -- it was like pastry it was so good. The cheese -- delightfully greasy, expertly seasoned. The sauce -- divine. The toppings-- first rate. My favorites were the Formaggio (good ol' plain cheese) and Pepperoni. With options this good, I don't have to whine about not living in the city of Tommaso's any more...
Posted by peterme at July 15, 2004 09:57 PMthe crimini mushroom slice was also spectacular. i'm so happy gioia exists in my childhood/teenage neighborhood, and am willing to drive from temescal to get a pie. this place is great!
Posted by: heather ann at July 19, 2004 10:10 PMI have loved every slice so far. Gioia knocked Arinell's out of the running for best NY style pizza. Will Gioia was a cook at Oliveto, knows what he's doing. Dopo in Piedmont also has great pizza, in a more traditional Italian style (also made by OIiveto alumni).
So now that we have pizza covered, who's going to step up with some decent buffalo wings? Anybody?
Posted by: Brian at July 31, 2004 01:57 PMIt is definitely amazing -- all the pizzas! The only downside is they close relatively early (before 9pm, I think) so no late night orders.
Gioia pizza is just like the pizza I got as a kid in New Jersey. Actually better than most. Crust is perfect, cheese is perfect (though I can do with a little less cheese) and sauce is just right. Love the near burnt crust.
BTW, they close at 8 pm. Too early.
