Truly Mediterranean now The Mediterranean
18 months ago, I wrote about Truly Mediterranean, my favorite SF shawarma joint, opening a branch in Berkeley. About 6 weeks ago, Truly Med turned into The Mediterranean.
It has pretty much the same menu, though there have definitely been changes in the recipes.
My old standby, the lamb shawarma, was much saucier than back in the Truly Med days. It was almost like eating a stew in a lavash, whereas Truly Med was simply about seasonings. That said, it was still quite good, and definitely filling.
Posted by peterme at June 19, 2005 03:38 AMForget the food -- the (revamped) Mediterranean has an amazing set of murals inside, including a fabulous impressionistic map on the region of the ceiling. It's worth visiting just to enjoy the decor.
Posted by: Anirvan at June 19, 2005 06:48 PMWhile it's not as fancy as some, I highly recommend a place in San Leandro, just a block south of the Oakland border called The Blue Dish on Victoria Circle, just off of Bancroft Ave.
Only open from 11-5 weekdays, the falafel is the best I've had in the bay area, the lamb shawarma is excellent, and, as a caterer as well, they have just about everything else you could want.

Posted by: Tim Holmes at June 20, 2005 11:43 AMi really like Holy Land in the Grand Lake area (there is another on College in the Elmwood as well)- their Baba Ganouj rocks, the pita is fresh, and their homemade lemonade (witrh mint!) really quenches a thirst!
